6 Signs of Dreams from Allah

Signs of Dreams from Allah: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told us that there are 46 parts of prophethood, and after the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) death, only one is left out of those 46 parts, and that is a righteous dream.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When the end of time approaches, the dream of a believer can hardly be false. The dream of a believer is one of forty-six parts of prophecy, and whatever is from prophecy does not lie.”

So people continue to see righteous dreams. And would you believe it, even non-Muslims receive righteous dreams from Allah from time to time? He also said that there are three types of dreams.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The most truthful of you are those with the truest dreams. There are three kinds of vision: a righteous vision, which is good news from Allah, a distressful vision from Satan, and a vision arising from oneself. If one of you sees something he dislikes, let him stand to pray and not speak to people about it.

Three Types of Dreams

1) Dreams from Subconscious Mind

The first type of dreams that the Prophet (peace be upon Him) called are the dreams of what your subconscious mind speaks to you. You might have watched a movie or read a book, or maybe thinking about a problem or issue, or something that you wish for. They’re not righteous dreams.

2) Bad dreams

The second type of dream the Prophet (peace be upon Him) talked about are the terrifying dreams, the dreams of horror, the dreams that come from the Shaytan, from Satan, and the devils. He said to not worry about those dreams as it’s the Shaytan playing games with you.

3) Good Dreams

The third type of dream is the righteous dream, and they are the dreams that come from Allah, from God. It’s either guide or a warning or good news. As the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “If you see a dream that you love and liked, and you feel at peace with, and when you woke up, you enjoyed it and you can remember it, then tell somebody whom you love and someone with wisdom.” He said, “But if you saw a dream that disturbs you or is terrifying or horrific in some way and it displeased you, don’t tell anyone about it but rather go and make wudu and pray two raka’a and rely on Allah.” He also said, “Seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the outcast”. when you see a dream that displeases you, such as a terrifying dream. Sometimes you might see snakes, scorpions, spiders, dogs, cats.” He said, “Spit three times to the left and say Allah three times, then turn to the other side.”

Abu Salama reported:

I used to see dreams (and was so much perturbed) that I began to quiver and have temperature, but did not cover myself with a mantle. I met Abu Qatada and made a mention of that to him. He said: I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: A good vision comes from Allah and a (bad) dream (hulm) from devil. So when one of you sees a bad dream (hulm) which he does not like, he should spit on his left side thrice and seek refuge with Allah from its evil; then it will not harm him.
[Sahih Muslim 2261a]

It is a Sunnah of the Prophet (salallahu) that when you sleep, you begin sleeping on your right. As for the left, you are allowed to sleep on the left; however, it is disliked. What you shouldn’t sleep on is your stomach. The Prophet (peace be upon Him) saw a man sleeping on his stomach in the Masjid, and he nudged him lightly with his leg and said to him, “Don’t sleep like that, This is a kind of sleep that Allah dislikes”. [ Sunan Ibn Majah 3723]

Another thing you can do about horrific dreams or disturbing dreams before you go to sleep: the Sunnah is to make wudu, if you can. Secondly, to sleep on your right in the beginning. Number three, recite Ayat al Kursi. Number four, put your palms on your mouth and recite the three Quls, then blow into your palms if you like and wipe over your head and body three times.

6 Signs of Dreams from Allah

As for the righteous dreams, the scholars said that there are a few signs to know that they’re righteous.

1) Remembering Every Detail. Usually, you remember every detail clearly.

2) When you dream about him, you can feel as if they’re real; you can almost touch and smell what’s going on.

3) When you wake up, you remember all the details because they were clear.

4) They are usually connected to something in real life.

5) They make sense in some way, so there is a reality to them.

6) They do not go against the Sharia, meaning if you saw a dream where someone is telling you to do something Haram or sinful, that’s from the Shaytan.

As for seeing the Prophet (peace be upon him) in your dreams or the angels, there’s no harm. Yes, it is possible to see angels in your dreams with a message. As for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Hadith is in Bukhari and Muslim, and he said, “Whoever sees me in their dream has truly seen me and will eventually see me, for the Shaytan cannot impersonate the way I look.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 6994]
