A woman wearing a burqa is shown enjoying dinner with her partner in a video shot in Dubai that has angered the locals. The tourist woman who recorded the video was heard making fun of the woman wearing the burqa and laughing in the background. Even though their conversation’s context was unclear, many people are outraged by this. Social media users criticized the video’s creator and tagged Dubai Police, calling on them to take tough measures against the video shooters. Filming local women without their permission is prohibited in the United Arab Emirates and can have dire repercussions.
A woman wrote sharing the clip on X, “In Dubai, a non-Muslim European woman films a Gulf tourist and mocks her religion. Where is Dubai Police? Why not arrest her and then refer her to the Public Prosecution? Do they have laws that preserve the dignity and privacy of Gulf tourists and prevent her from being photographed without her permission and defamed? Where are human rights? Where is the respect for religious rituals?”
Response by Dubai Police
Dubai Police promptly opened a formal inquiry into the incident in response to the outcry. In order to address the inappropriate behavior, they promised the public that “necessary measures” would be implemented.
“Thank you for contacting Dubai Police General Command. The matter has been transferred to the competent authority to take the necessary measures”, they wrote.
