10 Best Dua for Travelling: before Travelling, while Travelling. Dua for Journey

Dua for Travelling

Dua for Travelling: The universe was created and is maintained by Allah SWT. Every person who resides on our planet puts considerable effort into working day and night to provide for his family and earn a living. If he carries out all of these actions in accordance with God’s laws and the Prophet’s (PBUH) Sunnah, they all qualify as acts of worship.

However, if someone disobeys Islamic law in these things and violates it by using illegal means or begins to violate the rights of others in the name of economic battle, his efforts could bring him shame in the hereafter.

So it is best while we enjoy our travels, to recite these Dua for Travelling for the protection of ourselves and our loved ones.

Traveling in Islam

If one travels with the proper intentions, Islam sees it as a good deed. In reality, it was the discovery and travel of the early Muslims that made it possible for Islam to spread throughout the world today. As Allah states in the Quran, traveling helps us believe more strongly in our Creator.

These factors make traveling a kind of worship to our Creator. As Muslims, we are also expected to exhibit excellent manners (adab) when visiting other nations, in addition to continuing to maintain our religious requirements such as praying while on the road.

Why Should We Read the Dua Before Travelling?

Numerous dangers are all around us as we travel. By adhering to the Prophet’s (peace be upon Him) instructions and the decrees made by them, we can avoid these risks and ensure our safety. It is obvious that we can protect ourselves from all types of danger by engaging in prayer, charitable giving, and many other such activities, as well as by adhering to regulations and safety procedures. Before leaving home and after returning, we shouldn’t forget to read the dua for travel.

Prayer before Leaving

2 Raka’at of Sunnah Prayer

Before leaving the house, it is advised to offer two raka’ats of sunnah prayer with the goal of traveling.

Said by our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.:

إذا خرجتَ من منزِلِك فصلِّ ركعتينِ تمنعانِكَ مخرجَ السُّوءِ و إذا دخلْتَ إلى منزِلِك فصلِّ ركعتينِ تمنعانِكَ مدْخلَ السُّوءِ

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil.”

(Musnad Al-Bazzar)

In his book Al-Majmu, Imam An-Nawawi stated that it is advised to recite Surah Al-Kafirun after Surah Al-Fatihah in the first raka’at and Surah Al-Ikhlas after Surah Al-Fatihah in the second raka’at, respectively, when reciting this prayer.

Dua after leaving the house

Narrated by Anas bin Malik r.a, The Messenger of Allah s.a.w. said:

Dua after leaving the house

“Whoever says (upon leaving his house): “In the Name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no might or power except by Allah”,’it will be said to him: ‘You have been sufficed and protected, and the devil will go far away from him”.

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

Dua when getting into a vehicle

Dua when getting into a vehicle

English transliteration: Subhan Alladhi Sakh-Khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun

“So, that you may sit firmly on their backs, and remember your Lord’s blessings once you are settled on them, saying, “Glory be to the One who has subjected these for us, for we could have never done so ˹on our own. And surely to our Lord, we will all return.”

– [Surah Zukhruf ayat 13-14]

That is, only man has been granted permission by Allah SWT to use boats, ships, and animals as means of transportation among all other creatures of the world. Should he never ponder who produced some of the countless animals that served as his slaves and who enabled him to travel the vast seas? Profiting from these favors while disregarding the giver is a sign of a lifeless heart and insensitive conscience.

Because of how blessed and grateful a person will feel when they sit on these routes and cry, “Blessed is He who subjugated these things to me,” is a person with a lively heart and a sensitive conscience. He is more pure than anyone else who shares His essence, qualities, and abilities. He is blameless and untainted by the frailty of being unable to carry out his divine duties independently and reliant on other co-gods. He is so pure that I ought to pass along these favors to someone else.

(Mustadrak Al-Hakim)

Dua When you arrive at the place of stay

We might not be aware of past guests or previous events in the hotel room that might have an impact on our stay. The Hadith that was reported by Khawlah bint Hakim as-Sulaimiyyah r.a. mentions the following Dua as a means of protecting oneself from danger. Prophet s.a.w. said:

Dua When you arrive at the place of stay

A’uzu bikalimatillahit-tammati min syarri ma khalaq

Whoever enters at a place, and then prays:
“I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what is created,”
nothing would harm him until he makes his leave from that place.

(Sahih Muslim)

Dua for seeing someone who is ill or suffering from an illness

On occasion, while traveling, we may come across a variety of people, some of whom suffer from ailments or disabilities. While expressing sympathy, support, and dua for them is praiseworthy, it is also advised that we recite the following dua to guard against experiencing similar hardships.

The Messenger of Allah s.a.w. said:

Dua for seeing someone who is ill or suffering from an illness

“Alhamdulillahil ladzi ‘afani mimmab-talaka bih, wa faddalani ‘ala kathirin mimman khalaqa tafdila”

Whoever sees a person who is afflicted and says: “Praise be to Allah who had saved me from what He had afflicted you with, and for honouring me over many of his creations”, he (or she) will never be afflicted by it.

(Sunan Ibn Majah)

Dua while encountering problems while traveling

We occasionally experience difficulties while traveling. Asking Allah s.w.t. for pardon for our faults or failings is the best way to remember (Zikr).

Narrated by Abdullah bin Abbas r.a., the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said:

Dua while encountering problems while traveling

Whoever increases his prayers for forgiveness (i.e. Astaghfirullah), Allah will grant him relief from every worry, a way out from every hardship, and provide for him in ways he does not expect.

(Musnad Ahmad)

Dua after getting home

It is advised to recite the above-mentioned Dua for Travel upon returning home, and then to recite the following Dua:

Dua after getting home

“Ayibun, ta’ibun, ‘abidun, liRabbina hamidun”

We return, in repentant, worshipping, and praising our Lord

(Sahih Muslim)

Prayer after getting home

While it is advised to offer two raka’at of sunnah prayer before leaving the house to begin our journey, it is also advised to do so when we have reached our destination. Based on the same Hadith as previously mentioned:

إذا خرجتَ من منزِلِك فصلِّ ركعتينِ تمنعانِكَ مخرجَ السُّوءِ و إذا دخلْتَ إلى منزِلِك فصلِّ ركعتينِ تمنعانِكَ مدْخلَ السُّوءِ

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil.”

(Musnad Al-Bazzar)

It’s crucial that we travel for a significant portion of the time while offering true, heartfelt Dua. Our Prophet (s.a.w.) suggests doing this when he discusses the benefit of a traveler making dua:

ثلاثُ دعواتٍ مستجاباتٌ لا شَكَّ فيهِنَّ؛ دَعوةُ المظلومِ، ودعوةُ المسافرِ، ودعوةُ الوالدِ على ولدِهِ

“Three supplications are answered without a doubt: The supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveller, and the supplication of the parent for his child.”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

Dua for Travelling From Hadith:

1. It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mounted his camel to set out on a journey, he would say takbeer three times, then he would say:

Subhanaalladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen wa inna ila rabbina la munqaliboon

English Translation: Glory be to the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny.

– [Sahih Muslim 1342]

2. After leaving the house, we must recite a well-known dua for travelling from [Sunan Abi Dawud 5095] (classified as Sahih by Al-Albani).

English transliteration:

Bismillahi tawakkaltu ‘alallah la hawla wala quwwata illa billah

English translation: In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power but in Allah.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When a man goes out of his house and says: “In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power but in Allah,” the following will be said to him at that time: “You are guided, defended and protected.” The devils will go far from him and another devil will say: How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended and protected?

One becomes more closer to Allah SWT by constantly remembering Him. Furthermore, reciting this lovely Dua, which our Prophet (SAWS) recommended us to read for travel, only takes a few seconds. Put all of your trust in Him when you say the Dua.

How to Start And End Your Journey With Dua for Travelling?

Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: Ali ibn Rabiah said: I was present with Ali while a beast was brought to him to ride. When he put his foot in the stirrup, he said: “In the name of Allah”. Then when he sat on its back, he said: “Praise be to Allah”. He then said: “Glory be to Him Who has made this subservient to us, for we had not the strength, and to our Lord do we return”. He then said: “Praise be to Allah (thrice); Allah is Most Great (thrice): glory be to Thee, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for only Thou forgivest sins.” He then laughed. He was asked: At what did you laugh? He replied: I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) do as I have done, and laugh after that. I asked: Messenger of Allah, at what are you laughing? He replied: Your Lord, Most High, is pleased with His servant when he says: “Forgive me my sins.” He knows that no one forgives sins except Him.
