Dua to reach Ramadan & Authenticity

When is Ramadan 2024? Ramadan Date & Month 2024

The Dua to reach Ramadan , Allahumma ballighna Ramadan (O Allah, let us reach Ramadan) is being echoed more and more as Ramadan approaches. Despite its excellent sentiment, this phrase is not genuinely credited to the Prophet ﷺ. However, the Companions used to do a very thorough du’a in order to make it to safely at Ramadan and get spiritually ready for the month of mercy. A student of the fortunate Sahabah, Sh. Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, taught the following beautiful du’a:-

Dua to reach Ramadan

Dua to reach Ramadan

اَللّٰهُمَّ سَلّمْنِيْ إِلى رَمَضانَ وَسَلّمْ لِي رَمَضانَ وَتَسَلَّمْه مِنِّي مُتَقَبَّلا

Allahumma sallimni ila Ramadan wa sallim li Ramadan wa tasallamhu minni mutaqabbala

O Allah! Preserve me until Ramadan, safeguard Ramadan for me and accept it from me (receive my deeds with acceptance).

Are Hadiths Regarding Rajab’s Virtues Genuine?

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not mention the merits of the month of Rajab in any sahih (authentic) hadith.

“There is no authentic (sahih) hadith on the virtues of Rajab,” said Ibn Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him). With the exception of being one of the holy months, Rajab is identical to the month of Jumada al-Akhirah, which comes before it. Other than that, there are no required prayers, Umrah, fasting, or other activities throughout this month. It’s the same as every other month. (Liqa al-Bab al-Maftuh, 174/26)

Scholars have deemed this duaa, “O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Shaban, and let us reach Ramadan,” to have a poor chain of narration.

Dua for Reaching Ramadan: Origin and Authenticity

When Rajab started, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Shaban, and let us reach Ramadan,” according to Anas ibn Malik. (At-Tabarani, al-Bayhaqi, and Ibn Hanbal)

However, Imam An-Nawawi in al-Adhkar, Ibn Rajab in Lata’if al-Maarif, and al-Albani in Daif al-Jami` all deemed its isnad (narration chain) to be weak.

Can We Ask Allah to Help Me Reaxh Ramadan?

There is nothing wrong with a Muslim pleading with his Lord to allow him to reach Ramadan. Mualla ibn al-Fadl stated, “They used to pray to Allah Almighty for six months asking Him to cause them to reach Ramadan and they used to call upon Him for six months asking Him to accept it from them,” according to Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali (may Allah have mercy on him). Furthermore, according to Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, “O Allah, keep me safe until Ramadan, keep Ramadan safe for me, and accept it from me” was one of their duaas. (Lata’if al-Maarif)
