Dua When it Rains: The magnificent benefit of rain is something Allah (swt) bestows upon the planet. In Surah Ar-Rum and Surah An-Nur, Allah Pak says the following about this process:

“It is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir the clouds and spread them in the sky however He wills, and He makes them fragments so you see the rain emerge from within them. And when He causes it to fall upon whom He wills of His servants, immediately they rejoice.”

(Surah Ar-Rum, 30:48)

“Do you not see that Allah drives clouds? Then He brings them together, then He makes them into a mass, and you see the rain emerge from within it. And He sends down from the sky, mountains (of clouds) within which is hail, and He strikes with it whom He wills and averts it from whom He wills. The flash of its lightning almost takes away the eyesight.”

(Surah An-Nur, 24:43)

The gifts and mercy that Allah sends to the planet include rain. It follows that now is without a doubt one of the ideal periods to offer up numerous supplications. We were urged to pray when it rained by the Prophet s.a.w. In a hadith, he mentions:

ثِنتانِ ما تُرَدّانِ: الدُّعاءُ عند النِّداءِ، وتحْتَ المَطَرِ

“Two prayers (Dua) that are not rejected: The Dua when the call to prayer (Azan) is made and the Dua made when it rains.”

(Mustadrak Al-Hakim)

Recite these Duas when it rains:

1. Dua when it rains

After a rainy night, the Prophet s.a.w. is said to have led his companions in the Fajr prayer at Hudaibiya. In that narrative, the Prophet s.a.w. taught the companions that there are people who credit the rain to Allah and are true believers. The Prophet s.a.w. further cautioned the companions against eventually attributing the phenomena to the rain’s causal influence.

The alignment of the planets and stars at that time, which denote the changing seasons and times of the year, was said by the Arabs to be the cause of rain. However, if one were to comprehend the causal relationships while firmly believing that the entire order of creation is done by Allah alone, then this would not become a cause for concern.

From this hadith, the Prophet s.a.w. taught us to pray this Dua when it rains:

مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ

Mutirna bifadhlillahi wa rahmatihi

“We have received rain from Allah’s bounty and mercy.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

2. Dua for intense rain

Anas Ibn Malik, r.a., was mentioned by Imam Al-Bukhari. The Prophet (s.a.w.) was reportedly stated to have been giving the Friday khutbah (sermon) when a man entered and said: “O Allah’s Messenger s.a.w! livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; please pray to Allah for rain”.

The Prophet (s.a.w.) then raised his hands in prayer, saying, “O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain! ” . Anas r.a.  indicated in the precise narration that day, when a large cloud unexpectedly appeared and was moving in their direction from behind the Sila’ mountain, there were no clouds in the sky. They could hardly get to their homes since it arrived and rained so heavily. Up until the following day, it rained til next Friday.

In that narration, Anas added that on the following Friday, someone entered during the Friday khutbah and stated: “O Allah’s Messenger s.a.w! Livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; please pray to Allah to withhold rain”.

So the Prophet s.a.w. raised his hands and prayed:

اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلاَ عَلَيْنَا

Allahumma hawalaina wala ‘alaina

“O Allah! (Let it rain) around us and not on us.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

dua when it rains heavily

3. Dua while hearing thunder

According to a narration in Imam Al-Bukhari’s Book Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Abdullah Bin al-Zubair r.a. would pause in his conversation when he heard a thunderclap. Then, in the context of prayer, he would read Surah Ar-Ra’d, verse 13:

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي ‏‏يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلاَئِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِ‏

Subhaanal-lazii yusabbihur-ra’du bihamdihi wal-malaaikatu min khifatihi

“Glory be to him whose praise the thunderclap sings and the angels glorify in awe of him.”

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad)

4. Dua for Good rain

It is told by Aisha r.a. that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) used to pray for good rain whenever it rained and said: “O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.”

Allahummaj-‘alhu soyyiban naafi’an

“O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Why Rain is a Good time to Pray? Why make Dua when it rains

Rain is typically thought of as Allah’s benevolence (SWT).

When it is excessive or too much, it can also be thought of as Allah’s (SWT) wrath.

In order to make it rain in Allah’s favor, we should make dua when it rains and pray when it starts to rain.

The acceptance of Dua is also mustahabb (recommended) to be at its best at this time. a period for accepting the prayers. As long as it is not haram, you are free to ask Allah anything you want.

Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, is believed to have said: “Let not one of you refrain from working for his provision, supplicating to Allah to provide while he knows that the sky does not rain gold and silver.” Al-Ghazali narrated this.

Ihya’ Ulum al-Din 2/62 is the source.

We must actively look for Allah’s provision and put our trust in Him. Al-Ghazali wanted us to understand that when we want something, we must take responsibility for seeing it through. “It does not rain gold and silver,” thus it won’t mysteriously fall from the sky.
