What are the 99 Names of Allah?

ย

The most popular name for Allah SWT is Allah, which in Arabic is translated as โ€œThe God.โ€ In the Qurโ€™an, He calls Himself Allah, although He also indicates that He goes by other names:

โ€œAllahโ€”there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names.โ€ (Quran 20:8)
In another section of the Qurโ€™an, he further states:

โ€œAnd to Allah belong the best names, so call on Him by them.โ€ (Quran 7: 180)

The names and qualities that Allah SWT has used to describe Himself are listed above. We only attribute to Allah SWT what He has dictated to Himself, yet He has given us a variety of names to remember and address Him by in Prayers.

Why is it essential to memorize the 99 Names of Allah?

ย

We can enter Jannah by learning the 99 Names of Allah SWT (Al Asma Ul Husna).
The Prophet (SAW) said, โ€œAllah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.โ€ (Bukhari)

One of the keys to paradise is knowing Allah SWTโ€™s beautiful names. If we learn the names of Allah and strive to live by them, then Allah SWT will mercifully grant us entry into Paradise. Because we can only genuinely love Allah SWT when we know Him, learning His names also brings us closer to Him.

We are unable to love those we do not know. We might develop a greater sense of love and awe for Allah SWT by learning His names. So call on Him by them, Allah SWT commands in the Qurโ€™an, as stated in the ayah above. In addition to telling us to invoke His name, Allah SWT also gives us instructions on how to do so. If Allah SWT encourages us to utilize His beautiful names in this lovely interchange between us and Him, how rare and blessed must those names be since He loves it when we ask Him and He loves to give? How many of our prayers would be answered if we simply invoked Allah in His divine names?

How do the Names connect to what we do here on earth?

ย

When Allah SWT informed the angels of His choice to create Adam (AS), He said:

โ€œVerily, I am going to place in the earth a Khalifah (representative)โ€ฆโ€ (2:30)

A representative is someone who, frequently in a separate nation, carries out the will of the leader. When you represent someone, you are given the respect of the person you are representing, but you also have a great deal of responsibility for upholding the rules that have been established.

The Prophet (SAW) is a reminder of how to worship Allah SWT properly and in the most effective manner possible that pleases Him. Allah SWT has sent us to earth to worship Him. Humans cannot use some of Allah SWTโ€™s names, including Ar-Rahman, because they belong to Allah SWT alone. And some qualities, like Al-Qahhar (The Dominator/The Subduer) and Al-Aleem, can only be ascribed to Allah SWT (The All-Knowing).

The ability to learn to embody Allah SWTโ€™s characteristics in whatever human form we can, given our limited abilities and capacities, has been mentioned by scholars like Imam Al-Ghazali (r.h. ), despite the fact that no human will ever come close to fully embodying Allah SWTโ€™s attributes. For instance, since

SWT is Al-Kareem (The Most Generous), and we should make every effort to emulate his generosity.

We should strive to develop a forgiving spirit in ourselves since Allah SWT is Al-Ghafur (The Great Forgiver). We should strive to raise our degree of gratitude for the gifts we have received as well as for the kindnesses and favors shown to us by others because Allah SWT is Ash-Shakoor (The Appreciative). We become authentic ambassadors of Allah SWT when we take on these characteristics (in our very human way).

Because Allah SWT extends love and kindness to us, we ought to strive to do the same for others.
