Signs of Laylatul Qadr along with Authentic Hadiths

signs of laylatul qadr

Signs of Laylatul Qadr: Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Power, is a special night in the last ten days of Ramadan that is considered the most blessed night of the year in Islam. According to Islamic tradition, the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on this night.

In chapter 97 of the Quran, the Night of Decree (Laylatul-Qadr) is mentioned:

Indeed, We sent the Quran down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn. (97:1-5)

This night is better than a thousand months. What exactly does that mean?

This implies that whatever act of worship you perform that night counts as if you had been performing it for a thousand months. For instance, if you offer du’a that night, it will be as if you did so for a thousand months!

This is the reason why many Muslims attempt to find this night by staying up very late during the final 10 nights of Ramadan in order to receive such a reward.

Let’s see some of the signs of Laylatul Qadr we find in the Quran and Hadiths.

Signs of Laylatul Qadr

The signs of Laylatul Qadr are mentioned in Quran and various Hadiths:

1) It is a Peaceful Night:

life in jannah has no night

It’s a pleasant night, and we may predict that it will be so by the same Quranic verse:

Peace it is until the emergence of dawn. (97:5)

So we’re looking for a really quiet, serene night.

2) Neither Hot nor cold:

In Sahih Al-Jami’, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“ليلةُ القدْرِ ليلةٌ سمِحَةٌ ، طَلِقَةٌ ، لا حارَّةٌ ولا بارِدَةٌ”

The night of Qadr is calm, serene, and peaceful. It is not hot nor is it cold…

3) The Moon looks like a Piece of Plate:

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه، قال تذاكرنا ليلة القدر عند رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال أيكم يذكر حين طلع القمر، وهو مثل شق جفنة

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports: “We were discussing Laylatul Qadr in the presence of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and he said, ‘Who among you recalls when the moon appears/rises looking like a piece of a bowl.’”

(Hadith: 1170; from the Sahih Muslim)

‘شق جفنة’ denotes a portion or half of a bowl. Laylatul Qadr is on those nights when the moon satisfies this criteria, as indicated by Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum). The moon only rises in this way at the end of the month, according to the commentators.

4)  Find it in the Last Odd Nights

laylat-ul-qadr

Although the precise date of Laylatul Qadr is unknown, it is generally agreed that it falls within the last Ashra’s odd-numbered days. According to the Hadith, a dispute between some individuals made Allah lift the knowledge of when Laylatul Qadr fell. According to Ubaadah ibn as-Saamit (R.A.):

“The Prophet (PBUH) came out intending to tell us about Laylatul Qadr; however, two men were arguing, and he said:

“I came out to inform you about Lailatul-Qadr, but so and so, and, so and so were arguing, so raised it, and perhaps that is better for you, so seek it on the (twenty) ninth and (twenty) seventh and the (twenty) fifth.” (Bukhari)

Also, it is reported from the Prophet (PBUH) that:

“Verily, I saw Laylatul Qadr, and caused me to forget it, and indeed it is during the last ten (nights). It is during an odd night (the night of 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th of Ramadan).”

The night falls on one of the last ten odd-numbered nights of Ramadan (the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th).

Many individuals attempt to find the night of decree on Ramadan’s 27th just because it happened on the 27th before. Narrations are available for it, as well as for other nights.

The academics claimed that doing so requires wisdom; otherwise, why would one do acts of worship on any other night if they knew that they were supposed to take place on the 27th?

In essence, Laylatul-Qadr varies from year to year, but it always falls in the last 10 nights on the odd nights, allowing Muslims to pray generously during these nights for its benefit.

5) It may Rain during the night or day

dua when it rains

According to some narrations, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did recall having a dream about Laylatul-Qadr in which he had prostrated and then rose with mud and rain on his face. (Bukhari, Al, 813)

6) Weak Sun in the next Morning

“In the morning following Laylatul Qadr, the sun rises without any rays, appearing like a brass dish, until it rises high.” (Sahih Muslim)

Based on these Hadiths, the signs of Laylatul Qadr include a calm and peaceful night with a clear moon, a bright night with a feeble and red sunrise, and forgiveness of previous sins for those who worship Allah with faith and expectation of reward.
