Story of Yajuj and Majuj (Gog and Magog) in Islam

story of yajuj and majuj

Both the Quran and hadiths mention the story of Yajuj and Majuj. One of the signs of the end times will be their appearance. These things will happen once Dajjal, Mehdi, and Eesa (alaihi salam) arrive. They are explicitly referenced in both the Quran and the hadith, along with their existence, arrival, and consequences of that arrival.

The names Gog and Magog are found in both the Old Testament and the Quran. They are pronounced “Gog u-Magog” in Hebrew and “Yajuj amd Majuj” in Arabic. Their mention in the Quran and hadith plainly implies that they are people who will arrive in great numbers at the end of the world, despite the fact that they are occasionally individuals, occasionally peoples, and occasionally geographical regions.

Yajuj and Majuj, who are they?

Two tribes of people from the Turkish homeland are called Yajuj and Majuj. They are human beings, descendants of Adam (as), not monsters or demons. But they are mischievous by nature, unlike us. They enjoy destroying things, including people, buildings, plants, and crops. A lake can also be drank up by them.

Furthermore, they exist on this planet and are not from a future civilization. So why can’t we see them, then? Why don’t they invade our cities and demolish everything there? If you set Yajuj and Majuj loose on a population, nuclear weapons won’t be necessary. What makes them mysterious?

The verse Surat al-Kahf contains the solution.

In the surah, Allah tells the tale of a good ruler named Dhul Qarnayn who frequently traveled. He once came across a people group that had trouble communicating with him, yet they were still able to let Dhul Qarnayn know they had a problem. They requested assistance from Dhul Qarnayn claiming that some individuals going by the names of Yajuj and Majuj kept causing damage to their land.

“O Dhul-Qarnayn, Gog and Magog are [big] corruptors in the land”, they declared.”  So, may we set up for you an expense that you might incur as a barrier between us and them?”  (18:94)

Dhul Qarnayn built an exceptionally robust barrier between two mountains, which has prevented passage to this day for Yajuj and Majuj.

However, that barrier will soon be breached.

How Yajuj and Majuj will get out?

“La Ilahaillallah,” the Prophet of Allah (s.a.) uttered after he awoke from a nap one day. He said it three times.  ‘Woe to the Arabs from the evil drawn near. Today a gap has been made in the wall of Ya’juj and Ma’juj like this.’ And he formed ten (with his fingers).’” (Tirmidhi 2187)

The Prophet (saw) revealed to us how they would come out.

“They excavated each day, until when they are just about to penetrate it, their leader says: ‘Go back so that you can penetrate it tomorrow!’ But Allah makes it return just as it was, until their appointed time, when Allah ordains to send them upon the people, and their leader says: ‘Go back so you can penetrate it tomorrow, if Allah wills.’ So he makes this exception.” (Tirmidhi 3153)

Their Release

A significant indication that the Hour is approaching is the coming out of Yajuj and Majuj. (Tirmidhi 2183)

Allah will warn Isa (as) of the approaching Yajuj and Majuj and command him to seek sanctuary in a mountain with the believers after Isa (as) kills the Dajjal (False Messiah). The believers will find it more difficult to acquire food and water to survive as Yajuj and Majuj swarm through the land and start wreaking havoc down the mountain. (Riyad al-Salihin, b19 #1)

The Prophet (saw) foretold of their haughtiness as a result of their success. “They shoot their arrows into the heavens so they returned dyed with blood, and they say – crudely and arrogantly – ‘We vanquished those in the earth, let us dominate the inhabitants of the heavens.’” (Tirmidhi 3153)

The Prophet (saw) is also reported to have said, “Yajuj and Majuj are sons of Adam. If they were allowed to come out, they would cause mischief and ruin people’s lives, and not one of them would die before leaving behind one thousand or more of his offspring.” (Tabaraani, qt in ‘Areefi 368)

Destruction of Yajuj and Majuj

Prophet Isa (as) will make dua to Allah in order to annihilate them. Allah will send insects that adhere to their necks and cause them all to perish. (Riyad al-Salihin, b19 #1)

Given how they behaved on Earth, the Hellfire is surely where they will spend their final days.

The Messenger of Allah (sa) said: “Allah, the High and Glorious, would say: O Adam I and he would say: At Thy service, at thy beck and call, O Lord, and the good is in Thy Hand. Allah would say: Bring forth the group of (the denizens of) Fire. He (Adam) would say: Who are the denizens of Hell? It would be said: They are out of every thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine…. It is at this juncture that every child would become white-haired and every pregnant woman would abort and you would see people in a state of intoxication, and they would not be in fact intoxicated but grievous will be the torment of Allah.”

Upon hearing this, the Companions became depressed and questioned the Prophet, “Messenger of Allah, who amongst us would be (that unfortunate) person (who would be doomed to Hell)?”

He said: “Good tidings for you, Yajuj Majuj would be those thousands (who would be the denizens of Hell) and a person (selected for Paradise) would be amongst you.” (Muslim 222)

This is the Story of Yajuj and Majuj, how they will emerge, and how they will be destroyed. We hope you learned something valuable from the Story of Yajuj and Majuj. May Allah protect us from sins.
