Events that occurred on the 10th of Muharram (Day of Ashura')

Islam is the religion of truth, and it is a beautiful religion that all of Allah’s Prophets—from Adam to our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, came with.

As a result, we are grateful to Allah for this blessing of being a Muslim and are confident that the truth will always win out no matter how prevalent ignorance and ignorant people become. And there are a lot of lessons to be learned about this from the Ashura event. According to the hadith related by Bukhary and Muslim, Allah made fasting on the day of Ashura an optional recommendation because it is filled with blessings and teachings. Many important events that occurred on the 10th of Muharram make this a holy month. Let’s learn more.

Importance of 10th of Muharram (Day of Ashura)

 

Muharram is one of the four holy months of the year, and no fighting is allowed during this time. It is regarded as the second holiest month after Ramadan. The tenth day of Muharram is when Ashura takes place. Although the Day of Ashura is remembered for the tragic events of Karbala and martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, these are not the only reasons why the 10th of Muharram is important.

Many other important events regarding Previous Prophets occurred on this Day. That is the reason why 10th of Muharram is important.

Events that occurred in the Month of Muharram regarding Karbala

 

2nd Day of Muharram: Hazrat Hussain Ibn Ali (R.A.) arrived at Karbala and set up camp. Around him were the soldiers of Yazid.

7th Day of Muharram: Hazrat Hussain Ibn Ali (R.A) was denied access to water under Yazid’s directive.

8th Day of Muharram: Zain Ul Abideen (R.A.), the only survivor of the Battle of Karbala, was martyred. He was the son of Hussain Ibn Ali (R.A).

9th Day of Muharram: This evening is significant because the next day, 10th Muharram, marks the martyrdom of Hussain Ibn Ali (RA) and Abbas Ibn Ali (RA), as well as his family, leaving Zain Ul Abideen (RA) as the lone male survivor of the Karbala battle.

Events that occurred on the 10th of Muharram

 

• Allah forgave Prophet Adam on the day of Ashura (the tenth of Muharram).

• Allah preserved Prophet Noah, allowing his ark to land quietly and successfully on land.

• Allah protected Prophet Ibrahim from the oppressive Nimrood;

• The Prophet Ya’qoob and his son Yusuf were united by Allah.

• Allah granted the Children of Israel and the Prophet Musa victory, split the sea for them, and destroyed Pharaoh (Fir awn).

• Allah pardoned Prophet Dawud and bestowed great sovereignty upon Prophet Sulaiman.

• And on that day, Allah rescued Prophet Yunus from the whale by bringing him out.

• Allah healed Prophet Ayoub on the tenth of Muharram.

• The Battle of Dhat ar-Riqa took place on that day.

And Martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain

 

The assassination of Hazrat Imam Hussain (PBUH), the son of Hazrat Imam Ali, who is the son of Hazrat Fatimah (Radiallahu Anha), the daughter of Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam), caused a grave disaster to befall the Muslims on that day of Ashura, on Friday, the year 61 following the hijrah.

Unjust people killed Imam al-Hussein. At the age of 56, he perished as a martyr. When our Prophet said, “Husayn is from me and I’m from Husayn,” he honored him as well as his brother. Thus, “My love to him is full and so is his love to me, and my affection towards him is full and so is his affection towards me.”

Other noteworthy events that occurred on the 10th of Muharram, Day of Ashura

 

The following is what Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said about Ashura:

The Lawh-I Mahfuz (the preserved table), the seven heavens, the seas, the mountains, the pen, the stars, the Kursi, the angel Gabriel, and the other angels were all created on the Day of Ashura by Allah (swt).

On Ashura Day, the first raindrops began to fall from the sky.

On Ashura, the world will come to an end.

On Ashura days, back in the Era of Bliss (during the time of the Prophet), the Kaaba’s covering was replaced.

 

On the ashura day of every year during the time of our Beloved Prophet (swt), the Kaaba’s covering was renewed.

Hadrat Aisha related the following story:

“Ashura is the day which Kaaba is covered.” (Muslim, Abu Dawud)

Conclusion

 

In relevance to the Events that occurred on the 10th of Muharram, it is prescribed to fast on 9th and 10th of Muharram and send Duas to the Prophet and remember them in our Salahs and fast on these days.
